Kate has always loved to draw–especially animals, but happily draws just about everything. So not surprisingly, she decided to go to Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts where she was awarded a BFA with a major in metalsmithing. After graduating she worked as a demonstrating craftsperson. She also worked as an art teacher (grades K through 6).
Kate takes her sketch book with her wherever she goes. She filled her first sketchbook when she was three years old. It was titled Katie’s Zoo. This turned out to be a forecast for her future. Thirty years later she took the position of Exhibits Artist at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY. At the zoo, she painted murals, designed and constructed exhibits, and designed and illustrated signs. She was also the Zoo's photographer and writer/illustrator for the children's newsletter, MyZoo Jr.
Her illustrations have been published by Chicago University Press, Pioneer Valley Books and McGraw Hill Education.
When she creates picture books she sometimes starts with watercolors and then finishes her work using PhotoShop. Sometimes she does everything digitally but she prefers that her illustrations have the feel of traditional media.
Kate is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. She also attends Open Figure Drawing of Syracuse and enjoys meeting with her Critique partners.
